START THE HEALING – ASK FOR HELP

This job is hard and our profession is hurting. Are you feeling helpless about veterinary suicide, feeling helpless in general? Our #vetyoumatter campaign reminds all of us that we can work to heal a broken profession starting by normalizing mental health conversations and making it okay to ask for help. Empowerment and support of veterinary team members are how we keep this profession alive and we are here because YOU MATTER. Support your teammates by joining our Veterinary You Matter Campaign – display the design, start the conversation and Always Remember – Be Who You Are – You matter!

You matter, ask for help.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Are you feeling helpless about the veterinary suicide rate?

Our #vetyoumatter campaign gives you a way to make a difference.  Clinic cultures have to change in order for the suicide rate to change – we must make conversations about mental health normal and we must make it okay to ask for help.

Veterinary teams are superheroes who often think they have to do it all or look weak.  These superheroes have to know that they can ask for help at any time if we are going to reduce the fatigue and burnout that leads to suicide.  Asking for help can be to tackle a project, to get home on time or to get to a mental health professional. Our #vetyoumatter design carries the butterfly symbol of hope, veterinary caduceus, and a paw-print suicide awareness semi-colon along with the words “YOU MATTER” – it is intended to remind you that there is hope and absolutely no reason to be ashamed to ask for help!.  Visit our online store and bring the design to your clinic – use it to start talking with your team.

Are you feeling helpless in general?

Veterinary professionals are problem solvers and fixers; we don’t like to feel out of control. But we have all been there at one point or other and we want you to know that there is hope. YOU MATTER.

There is something you can do to overcome the feeling of helplessness.  Start with a conversation – pick up the phone, live chat a co-worker or friend, talk to someone, anyone, share your story and ask for help.

Fight the stigma – visit our online store for #vetyoumatter wristbands, shirts, mugs, and more.  Please get several #vetyoumatter suicide prevention hotline stickers. They belong on drug safes, bathroom mirrors and in break rooms where a simple sticker could literally save a life.  You already save pets’ lives, now save your teammates too.

You Matter – Ask For Help

Note: If you are experiencing thoughts of ending your own life, please know that YOU MATTER – stop, reach out, and ask for help by contacting The National Suicide Prevention Line. In the USA that is 1-800-273-8255. In Canada, that is 1-833-456-4566.

We are here to empower and inspire all types of veterinary professionals, and we are asking for your help! There are three ways you can be involved with Vet Med After Hours:

  1.  We are always looking for guests - you or one of your superhero colleagues would be perfect for our conversations. Know someone who thinks they are ordinary, but you know they are extraordinary? Just give us a shout, and we will get it scheduled!
  2.  We are accepting journal excerpts and blog articles for our monthly story hour. Your writings can be anonymous, or it can be your chance to be published! Contact us for details on how to become a Vet Med After Hours writer!
  3.  Alec and Tracy love to talk (and you love to listen!) - send us a topic you would like us to discuss on one of our lunch chats, and we will send you a You Matter wristband!

We know that each of you has a story that is both familiar and unique - drop us a line so we can get to know you!
